“The Internet Portrait”, or “How You See a Person You Know Only Over the Internet”.

Socializing over Internet is vastly different from doing so in person. In the physical world the first (and only) thing you see in a stranger is exterior. Face, body, clothes, things… and the Internet is the opposite: you see nothing but mental qualities. Often - absolutely nothing, even if you know the said person for years.

I have several such acquaintances. These people are quite secretive, so despite kinda-sorta-knowing them for years, I still know very little about their physical selves. Heck, for some I don’t even know if they’re male or female!

And after so much time of uncertainty and fruitless attempts to find information I started asking myself - does it really matter? Maybe the part of the personality I see behind an online handle counts as a separate person in its own right? Is there a difference?
